some of those noses looked like one's my grandpa posed in front of during the war with his air force buddies..

i recognize the odnald duck one on of the girly ones and the indian looks familiar but i think it was a tinier body with the head of a adolecent indian.

those are pretty cool, but now days they could not have those pictures because it's not politiclly corect or sensitive enough. Did you know that the Canadian Forces do not use claymore mines because the name is too offensive and anti-social. Instead we use a "C19 remote detonated defensive device", which is exactly like a Claymore.

Hey Steel, the cartoons and some of the part-nudes were the work of some of Walt Disney's artists who were commissioned during WWII to do some of the artwork and nosework on the bombers and the noses of fighters also. Not all, just some.
Gotta admit, they were good no matter who did it.

Nose Art My wife was named after her father's plane a B-24 called Sexy Sue
Mother of Ten. The crew named my wife and they could not call her Sexy Sue
so they called her Penny Sue. There were 4 Sexy Sue B-24s called Sexy Sue
and they were all named by her father "Hoppy" the pilot. The first Two crash landed
after a missions they were on, being badly shot up. The third one, another pilot
crash landed it while Hoppy was sick, it to was shot up. The fourth one was the one
that finally he and his crew were killed in. They were shot down over the Marshall
Ilse. My wife is this week visiting the sister of her father's bombardier in Mn. I will
post a picture when I find it. We are also looking for his plane and we are getting
very close. Believe it or not the Jap government is still very reluctant to give up
info. on these subjects, but in the end my wife and I will prevail.

Looks like some are repeats, but these appear to be different views, or are maybe pics of the artwork in color as opposed to older black and white, or even color pics. Guessing many are from Mustangs?

I noticed a number of Lanc III's in there. Never even knew the Brit crews were permitted to doll their birds up. Were they Canuck crews? That'd be news to me too.. thought our boys only flew fighter missions. Anyone got the straight dope on that?

And I might add, They were pretty good paintings,,I think there must have been modeling going on at the time,,however the one bad note,,they were black n white,,

Here's a couple that are still flying courtesy of The Collings Foundation, www.collingsfoundation.org The pics were taken at the GoldenWest Fly-In in Marysville, CA. $400 will get you a 30-min flight in one of these historic birds.

Nine O'Nine is a B-17G, one of 14 flying in the US. She was built in APR '45 and assigned to the Air/Sea 1st Rescue Sqdn. She is named in honor of a B-17 assigned to 323 BS, 91BG that made 18 trips to Berlin.

Witchcraft is a B-24, the only fully restored flying example in the US. This is its third paint scheme since being restored and honors a plane assigned to 790BS 467BG which flew 130 combat missions over Europe with the Mighty Eighth. It was first painted as 15th Air Force's All-American, which shot down 14 enemy fighters on one mission. It was then painted as The Dragon and His Tail, [also my favorite being a dragon freak] probably the most extensive nose art ever done, to honor those who flew the Pacific theater.

Check 'em out!

Check six. ~(*_*)~ Flag

It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died. Rather we should thank God that such men lived.

Name: Bocks Car
Type: B-29 Superfortress

The B-29 "Bocks Car", named after it's pilot, Capt. Frederick Bock, was the aircraft that dropped the second atomic bomb, codenamed FATMAN, on Nagasaki, Japan. On that mission, it was accompanied by another B-29, "The Great Artiste", which was loaded with scientific monitoring and recording equipment. The five "fatman" mission tally marks are for the four missions dropping 10000 lb. "pumpkin" bombs designated by the black "fatman" marks, and one red "fatman" mark for the atomic bomb dropped on 9-AUG-45.

Hope this clears up the "type unknown" shown after the aircrafts name.

Great Noseart photos Steel. The one for BocksCar shows unknown type. BocksCar was the B-29 Superfortress that dropped the second Atomic bomb on Nagasaki to end WWII. BocksCar is on display at the US Air Force Museum at Wright-Patterson AFB, Dayton, Ohio.
